Katy was born on September 13, 1918 to Conrad Jacob & Katherine (Sinner)Helzer near Stockham, Ne. She graduated from Stockham High School in 1935. She often told us about riding horses to school & sometimes pulling a sleigh. Her family hosted the school teacher on many occasions. Katy was proud of graduating and attended her class reunions for as long as she was able.
She became her father’s hired hand after all her brothers left. She worked hard doing chores on the farm and helped her mother in the house as well. She traveled around with her father to the county fairs with his cookhouse. He served hamburgers, coke, pancakes and the famous Helzer taffy. They even went to the state fair. The taffy tradition continues with her children and grand children.
Katy was united in marriage to Paul H. Traudt on April 25, 1941 at the home of Rev. Kissinger in Clay Center, Ne. Following the quiet ceremony, the happy couple went to Omaha for a short honeymoon. They made their home on a farm in the Stockham and Eldorado area. Paul did custom farm work while Katy did the farm chores and raised their family. They were blessed with 1 son and 5 daughters. They moved into Sutton in 1946. Katy worked hand in hand with Paul in his many business adventures throughout the years. Paul & Katy were married for 49 years before his death in 1990.
Katy was a charter member of the Sutton High School Band Mothers for many years. She worked hard helping with fund raisers to get the first band uniforms and never missed a band concert. She loved music and loved to sing hymns. She was also a member of the United Methodist Church, Sutton Christian Church and a bowling team in Sutton.
She loved working in her flower beds of Irises and Peonies. She spent many hours playing scrabble, doing crossword puzzles, playing cards, putting puzzles together and lending a helping hand to those in need. Her greatest love was her family.
Katy is survived by her daughters, Mary (John) Robbins of Kearney, NE; Carol (Ken) Griess and Patty (Todd) Leininger of Sutton, NE; Paula (Marvin) Teetor of Omaha, NE; and daughter-in-law Joleen Traudt of Aurora, NE.
