Richard Merrick - December 08, 2009

Richard G. Merrick, 85, of Sutton, father of Aurora residents Barbara Alberts and Michael Merrick, died Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at the Sutton Community Home in Sutton.
Funeral services were Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Federated Church in Sutton with Rev. Eric Biehl officiating. Burial was in the Sutton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to the Sutton Volunteer Fire Department scholarship fund or the Sutton American Legion scholarship fund.
Richard was born Aug. 11, 1924, at Osceola to Alvin and Grace (Grant) Merrick. He received his early education in Osceola and later graduated from Clay Center High School. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps, serving during WWII and the Korean Conflict.
On March 18, 1944, he married Jean A. Randall in Broken Bow and to this union three children were born, Barbara, Michael and Patrick. He was employed with the U.S. Postal Service for 38 years in Clay Center and Sutton, Smith Brothers Implement, Jack Eliason’s service station and Friesen Chevrolet. He also served one term as mayor of the City of Sutton.
He was a member of the Federated Church, Sutton Volunteer Fire Dept., American Legion Argonne Post #61, VFW Post #7102, 40/8, Rural Mail Carriers Association and was a Hunter’s Safety Instructor for many years.
He is survived by his daughter Barbara J. (Steve) Alberts of Aurora; sons Michael E. (Debe) Merrick of Aurora; Patrick (Barbara) Merrick of Sutton; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; brother Chuck Merrick of Tucson, Ariz.; sister Ruth Thomas of Glen Haven, Colo.; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, in July 2007, his parents and a great-grandson
