Eugene Heuermann - August 11, 2009

Eugene M. Heuermann, 82, of Grand Island, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, at the Nebraska Veterans Home.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 15 at the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island. Rev. Caroline Price-Gibson officiated. Burial was in the Phillips Cemetery. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at www.higbymortuary.com.
Eugene Masters Heuermann, son of Bernard B. and Maggie M. (Hartnell) Heuermann, was born on the family farm in Hamilton County on Dec. 16, 1926.
He grew up on the family farm in Hamilton County and graduated from Phillips High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army during the Occupation Japan before being honorably discharged in 1946. When he returned he attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and received his agronomy degree in 1951. He was a member of Farmhouse Fraternity.
On Feb. 8, 1953, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Jean Elseman at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Omaha. He farmed in Hamilton County his entire life.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Murphy Elevator Social Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of Grand Island; six children, Ken (Beth) Heuermann of St. Louis, Mo., Karen (Keith) Maurer of Columbus, Fred (Lourdes) Heuermann of Grand Island, Cheryl Furse of Grand Island, John (Svetlana) Heuermann of Moscow, Russia and Troy (Kristin) Heuermann of St. Paul, Minn.; 14 grandchildren, David and Sarah Heuermann of St. Louis, Mo., Anna Maurer of Columbus, Andrew, Laura, Renae and Brandon Heuermann of Grand Island, Chris and Tom Furse of Grand Island, Arina and Renata Heuermann of Moscow and Max, Maggie and Nolan of St. Paul, Minn. He is also survived by a brother, Keith (Norma) Heuermann of Phillips and four sisters, Dorothy Nelson of Fresno, Calif., Elizabeth Heuermann of Salt Lake City, Utah, Martha (Ralph) Knobel of Fairbury and Alma (Norm) Rohlfing of Talmage.
