Joseph Robert Spellman, 68, of Walnut Shade, Mo., died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York, N.Y..
Graveside services were held at Lindale Cemetery in Polk on Aug. 11. A memorial service will be held in Branson, Mo. at Our Lady of the Lake church on Friday, Aug. 14 at 10 a.m.
Mr. Spellman was born Nov. 15, 1940 in Waukegan, Ill.to Robert Douglas Spellman and Corena Mary (Kern) Spellman.
He grew up in Waukegan, Ill. until he and his mother moved to Santa Ana, Calif. when he was 13. He went into the Army in 1958 and was called back to active duty during the Cuban missile crisis. He was a master auto painter for most of his career until he and his wife started their own photo business, retiring in 2005 to move to Branson, Mo.
He was a gentle, generous man who loved his family deeply. With a twinkle in his eye, he loved to tease and joke. Some of his greatest joys were traveling with his wife, camping, gardening, spending time with his grandchildren and visiting his Nebraska family.
Survivors include his wife Lois (Eberhard) Spellman formerly of Aurora; three children, Jeffery (Liz) Spellman of Orange, Calif., Julie (Chad) Sweet of New York, N.Y. and Mary Spellman of Bronxville, N.Y.; three grandchildren, PFC Joseph Spellman, currently stationed in Afghanistan, and Chloe and Abigail Sweet of New York, N.Y.; brother and sister-in-law Neal and Ruth Sandell of Polk; and 18 nephews and nieces.
