Marvel Berck - July 26, 2009

Marvel (Jim) D. Berck, 86, of died Sunday, July 26, 2009.
A parlor service was held Saturday, Aug. 1 at Elmwood Chapel, in Birmingham, Ala. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery with full military honors.
He was born Oct. 19, 1922 in Aurora to John and Lyda Berck.
He attended school in Marquette before moving to Stromsburg in 1939, where he graduated from Stromsburg High School in 1940.
During World War II, Jim served in the US Army, assigned to the medical detachment of the 110th AAA Gun Battalion, operating in Europe from 1943 through 1945. He continued his military service through the Korean War. He continued his education at the Chamber of Commerce in Lincoln and worked for the VA Hospital there for 30 years, where he was the supervisor of the X-ray Department.
He was a member of the Lincoln Post 3 of the American Legion and a long time member of NARFE.
After returning home following World War II he married Doris L. Hughes on Dec. 8, 1945. They were members of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Lincoln since 1945. In 1999 they moved to Birmingham, Ala. to be closer to their daughter and her family. They became members of Bluff Park United Methodist Church in Hoover, Ala. The couple was married for 62 years until Doris’ death in 2008.
Jim was a very devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
He is survived by his daughter, DeAnn, from Birmingham, Ala. and his brother, Linley Berck of Aurora, Nebraska. He has two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Berck. His parents, John and Lyda Berck, five sisters, Lillian Newcomer, Ethel Schwartz, Mamie Eriksen, Myrtle Anderson and Avis Berck; four brothers, Borden Berck, Vern Berck, Archie Berck and Woodrow Berck.
The family request memorials be made in his honor to Bluff Park United Methodist Church Food Pantry at 733 Valley Street Hoover, AL 35226.
