Bernice R. Larsen - July 31, 2009

Bernice R. Larsen, 89, of Grand Island, died at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island, Friday, July 31, 2009.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, in the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Paul Blanchard officiating. Burial will be at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery at Kronborg. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.soltfh.com.
Bernice was born on Nov. 29, 1919, in Central City to Herman A. and Ruby G. (Sigman) Johns. She graduated from Central City High School in 1937.
She married Orvis V. Larsen in 1939 in Seattle, Wash. They returned to Nebraska to farm the Johns’ family farm north of Central City for the next seven years, until moving to Scottsbluff. From 1951 to 1962, they owned and operated West Overland Produce in Central City. In 1962, they returned to farming; and during this time, Bernice also worked at the Highway Grocery in Central City. They retired in 1984 and moved to Grand Island.
While living in Central City, she was a member of the United Methodist Church and had taught Sunday School. After moving to Grand Island, they attended the Trinity Methodist Church. She enjoyed crafts (especially making cornhusk dolls), sewing, and in their retirement years she and her husband enjoyed ballroom dancing. Her greatest love was for her family and their family gatherings.
Survivors include her husband, Orvis of Grand Island; two sons, Orvis and Janet Larsen of Alamo, Calif. and Tom Larsen of Lincoln; one daughter, Shelley Blodgett of Grand Island; nine grandchildren, Mitch and Joyce Larsen, Robin Larsen, Hollie and Jeff Lehman, Cindy and Neal Huston, Monte and Michelle Larsen, Brian Larsen, Aaron Larsen, Shannon and Adam Ward, and Sarah and Joshua Hood; nine great grandchildren; and one sister, Thelma Kennaley of Napa, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Ruby Johns and her brother, Roy Johns.
