Lenore E. Gustafson - June 03, 2014Celebration of Life Services for Lenore E. Gustafson will be conducted from the Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege, on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Neil Brower officiating. Private family inurnment will be in the Moses Hill Cemetery in Phelps County prior to the services.
Lenore Ellen Gustafson, 95 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at the Christian Homes Care Community at Holdrege. She was born on April 21, 1919 to Carl E. and Junetta (Anderson) Hendricks on a farm near Sumner. In 1921, the family moved to Phelps County. Lenore attended rural schools there and graduated from Holdrege High School with the class of 1936.
She taught in rural schools for three years and one year in Funk. During summers, she took classes at Kearney Teacher’s College in Kearney and at Wheaton College at Wheaton, Ill. Later, she graduated from Free Church Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois.
On Sept. 3, 1941 she married Wesley Lavern Gustafson from Phillips, at the Holcomb Evangelical Free Church in Phelps County. They first lived in Chicago where each of them finished their schooling. Later, in Fremont, they were in home missionary work, then to a pastorate in Berkeley, Calif. where they also studied Chinese at the University of California in Berkeley. After two years spent in China as missionaries with the Evangelical Free Church, they then worked with Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship and in Free Church pastorates in St. Paul, Minn. and Fullerton, Calif. From there they moved to Richfield, Minn., where her husband, Wesley, worked as Secretary of Orient Missions for ten years, when failing health necessitated retirement. They retired in Kearney in 1979. Her husband died on Oct. 13, 1986.
Before getting married, she traveled with a Sextet in the summer of 1941. She enjoyed being a pastor’s wife, a deaconess, Cub Scout den mother, Sunday school teacher, Jr. church leader, Sunday school registrar, choir member, White Cross member, tending to her flower garden, word games, entertaining and being with her family.
Besides her parents and husband, Wes, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Don Hendricks and Dean Hendricks; one infant great-grandson, Sven Gustafson; and her first grandson, Abraham Gustafson.
She is survived by her two sons: Dennis Gustafson of Kearney, Doug Gustafson and his wife, Denise of Holdrege; two daughters: Nancy Maitzen and her husband, Curtis of Garden Grove, Calif., Julie Jeffery and her husband, Rick of Holdrege; seven grandchildren and their spouses: Rebecca Willhoit, Grant and Beth Gustafson, Ben Gustafson, Isaac and Melissa Gustafson, Kristin and Trent Benjamin, A. J. and Melissa Jeffery and Tiffany and Jacob Mohs; 13 great-grandchildren: Leroy and Ivan Gustafson, Nolan and Skylar Benjamin, Gray and Jake Gustafson, Abbie, Jordan and Sam Gustafson, Elias, Solomon and Dylan Gustafson and Elizabeth Jeffery; 2 great-great-grandchildren: Lila and Rhythm Gustafson; three sisters-in-law: Eldora Nelson, Leone Gustafson and June Gustafson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
There will be no visitation as the family is honoring Lenore’s wish for cremation.
A memorial has been established in Lenore’s honor and will be designated at a later date.
