A day to remember, celebrate PDF E-mail

Monday was a day for both celebrating and remembering across Hamilton County, as area residents welcomed summer with annual Memorial Day services in perfect weather for doing anything and everything outdoors. The Aurora American Legion Post 42 set the tone with brief services at several area cemeteries, where Mike Powell reminded everyone of the day’s special focus.

“While we consider today the first day of summer, please remember it’s not about the barbecues, picnics or the auto races,” Powell said at services in the Aurora Cemetery. “Today is a day to remember those who died in service to this great country. That’s why we are here, so please let us remember.”
Powell recognized veterans in each crowd, tipping the hat especially to World War II veterans, whom he said Tom Brokaw called the Greatest Generation. For a complete story, see this week's print or e-edition.
