The Aurora Legion Seniors will meet Wayne in the Class B Area 5 championship game Tuesday evening.
Wayne advanced to the championship after defeating Albion 8-7 on Monday. Both teams led by three runs during the game, but Albion scored three runs to tie it at 7-7. Wayne responded by loading the bases with one out and taking a walk to end the contest.
No. 3 Aurora knocked off top-seed Wayne 11-7 in a 10-inning affair Sunday night at Mitchell Field. Wayne led 6-4 after the second inning, but Aurora chipped away with single tallies in the fifth and sixth before a five-run explosion in the 10th. Earlier Sunday, Albion rallied with four runs, including a solo homer, to eliminate second-seed Crofton 7-6.
Albion and Crofton advanced in the tournament by virtue of their Saturday wins in elimination rounds. Albion took out Central City 12-2 by taking control with a four-run first inning and pushing its lead to 10-2 after three. Crofton needed a rally to end Columbus Lakeview's season 9-4, as Lakeview took advantage of three errors to lead 4-2 after three innings. But Crofton used seven hits to score seven runs in the final four innings combined.
On Friday night, third-seed Aurora knocked off second-seed Crofton 10-0 in five innings behind a complete-game pitching performance by Tanner Griffith, who struck out six Crofton batters. Seven players reached base multiple times for Aurora, which scored at least one run in every inning.
In earlier action Friday, Central City won 15-5 in six innings to eliminate Pierce from the tournament. Pierce led 5-3 after the top of the third but Central City scored 12 unanswered runs, including a bases-loaded hit batsman to end the game. Top-seed Wayne broke open a 3-0 contest against Albion by scoring six runs in the fifth inning en route to a 10-0 win. Drew Carroll ended the game with a leadoff solo homer into left-center as the only batter in the bottom of the sixth.
On Thursday, Aurora won its opener 16-10 over Central City. The Big Red led 15-4 after scoring four runs in the top of the sixth inning, but Central City answered with six scores, all with two outs, in the bottom of the inning. Also on Thursday, Crofton scored eight runs on four hits and three errors to take an 11-1 lead over Pierce after 2-1/2 innings en route to a 15-5 triumph. To begin the tournament, Albion led Columbus Lakeview 8-1 after three innings on its way to a 9-3 win.
