Several individuals were recognized at the Aurora Area Chamber & Development’s annual awards banquet Thursday for making a difference in various ways. The winners included Bob and Steve Leach at Leach Insurance Center in Aurora, the Gold Award; Bill Hunter, Agricultural Award; Marilyn Vrana, Educator of the Year; Audrey Vaught, AACD Member of the Year; Matt Thomas, Entrepreneur of the Year; and Dr. John Wilcox, Healthcare Award winner. To Helen Jacobsen’s way of thinking, there’s absolutely nothing unusual about an 83-year-old woman holding down a job.
It’s perfectly normal to her, because it’s been her way of life for as long as she can remember.

"Working is all I’ve ever known. I don’t know anything but work and I enjoy working," she said at the end of her shift in the dietary department at Memorial Hospital in Aurora. "I’ve gotten into reading after I got a Nook for Christmas. But I feel guilty sitting still for three or four hours reading, because I know I haven’t accomplished anything."
